Combating Chronic Bad Breath: Tips from Dr. Adam Rauzman DDS
Halitosis, commonly known as bad breath, can often be traced to certain foods such as garlic, onions, or cabbage. While these foods can cause temporary bad breath, they’re usually resolved by simply avoiding them. However, persistent bad breath can signal a more serious issue that isn’t fixed just by changing your diet.
Chronic bad breath is typically caused by bacteria residing in your mouth, often found on the back of the tongue, and it thrives in a dry mouth environment.
To help manage or eliminate persistent bad breath, consider these strategies:
- Maintain Excellent Oral Hygiene.
Brush your teeth thoroughly after meals and at least twice daily. Don’t forget to clean between your teeth with dental floss or an interdental cleaner to remove food particles that can contribute to unpleasant odors. - Brush Your Tongue.
Even with good brushing and flossing, bacteria can linger on your tongue. Use a tongue scraper or your toothbrush to gently remove food particles and bacteria from your tongue every time you brush. Aim to reach as far back as comfortably possible without triggering your gag reflex. - Stay Hydrated.
A dry mouth encourages bacteria growth. Drinking plenty of water helps keep your mouth moist and aids in washing away bacteria and food particles. - Avoid Breath-Causing Triggers.
Foods like onions, garlic, and cabbage, along with coffee and tobacco products, are known to contribute to bad breath. Limiting these can help improve your breath. - Chew Sugarless Gum.
Chewing sugarless gum stimulates saliva production, which helps keep your mouth moist and reduces bacterial growth, thereby helping to minimize bad breath. - Enhance Your Diet.
Incorporate crunchy fruits and vegetables, yogurt, and foods rich in vitamins C and D into your diet. These can help reduce bacteria, improve mouth cleanliness, and increase saliva flow. - Visit Your Dentist.
